In this post I am going to discuss about the Different types of RAM
Static RAM is a volatile memory in which if the power is off,all the data stored in the memory are lost.It requires constant current flow to function.No refresh is needed for the static RAM to store the Data.
Static RAM consumes less power and has faster access speed.It has less memory capacities and costs more.
It is most commonly used in CPU cache and Hard drive cache.
Dynamic RAM is also a volatile memory in which if the power is off,all the data stored in the memory are lost.It requires constant current flow to work. Refresh needed for the Static RAM to store the Data because it has a constant power flow.
Static RAM consumes more power and has slow access speed.It has more memory capacities and costs less.It is most commonly used in System memory and Video graphics memory.
Synchronous Dynamic RAM
SDRAM works in sync with the CPU clock and waits for the CPU clock signal for the Data input.The pipelining concept is used in SDRAM.
In Pipelining,CPU processes the overlapping instructions in parallel.It is the ablility to receive the new instruction before completing the previous instruction.
Pipelining allows one read and one write instruction per clock cycle which leads to higher overall CPU performance and transfer rates.
SDRAM is used in Computer memory and Video game consoles.
Single Data Rate SDRAM and Double Data Rate SDRAM
In Single Data Rate SDRAM,it allows one read and one write instruction per cycle. SDR SDRAM has 168 pins and 2 notches.
In Double Data Rate SDRAM,it allows two read and two write instruction per cycle. DDR SDRAM has 184 pins and a single notch.
Both SDR SDRAM and DDR SDRAM is used in Computer memory and Video game consoles.
DDR2 SDRAM is an upgrade of DDR SDRAM and faster than DDR SDRAM.It runs at high clock speeds.The maximum clock rate of DDR2 SDRAM is 533MHz.It can run at lower voltage and has 240 pins.
DDR3 SDRAM has greater memory capacity and lower power consumption.It runs at high clock speeds.The maximum clock rate of DDR3 SDRAM is 800MHz. It has 240 pins.
DDR4 SDRAM has advanced signal processing and greater memory capacity.It consumes less power and has 288 Pins.The maximum clock rate of DDR4 SDRAM is 1600MHz.
GDDR SDRAM(Graphics Double Data rate SDRAM)
GDDR SDRAM is designed for video graphics.GDDR SDRAM also has GDDR2 SDRAM,GDDR3 SDRAM,GDDR4 SDRAM,GDDR5 SDRAM like DDRAM SDRAM.It is most commonly used in Video Graphics cards and tablets.
Flash memory is an non-volatile memory.It stores all the data after the power supply is off.It is used in USB flash drives,Printers,Memory cards,PDAs.
